About

My goal is to compile a browseable list of all of the independent booksellers in Los Angeles and its surrounding Southern California area. This project was inspired by a trip to Portland where I was able to pick up a brochure of booksellers located in the city pretty early in my visit and it made me sad that I haven't been able to find a similar resource in LA.

To my friends and family I'm a bit of a luddite. I also have a list of about 200 bookstores and counting to organize so it may take some time to get this website even semi-functional.

Criteria For Inclusion

  • Has enough of a presence on Google maps that can be used to verify the store's existence, OR
  • I have personally visited the store and have first-hand knowledge that it is an active storefront
  • A large majority of the store is dedicated to books, there can't just be "bookstore" in the name and a small corner for books

Factors for Exclusion

  • Mainstream MegaChain (Really just B&N at this point, rip Borders)
    • Chains like Kinokuniya, BOOKOFF, Bargain Books, etc are included because they are either specialty stores or are second-hand stores that assume their own personalities based on the communities they are locaed in
  • Campus Bookstores
  • Library bookstores (might waffle on this one, let me know if you think they should be included!)
  • Online business with a business address listed on Gmaps, we're looking for browsable storefronts
  • The owner has requested not to be included
    • If you are the owner of a store listed on this site and would like to be removed, email me at littlestbookshops.shorten528@passfwd.com
